JR: GPU improvements will be from DirectX 9 up, as well as the command stream. The announcement of DX11 support also hinted at better GPU performance – and that is apparently not going to be limited to DX11. He is really at that rock-star level in what he does. So for anything graphics related, it comes down to Henry. He is the foremost authority on Gaming and Graphics in the WINE community, he is considered to be an expert by most peers regarding his experience in this particular area of WINE. Henri has been working on the WINE project for years. I am sure there are other people who contribute a little, but all is pretty much depending on the work that he does at this stage. Henri Verbeet is the person actually doing it. Do they literally mean a single contributor, or several people working on it part time ? We’ve been working on this since the fall of 2014, and we anticipate sometime in November to have that framework in place. We anticipated it was going to be a one man/year project. We are about 4 months to having a framework for DirextX 11 in Crossover/WINE. James Ramey (JR): It has taken about 9 months to get to where we are today. While the announcement of DX11 support is fairly new, they have actually been at work on it for quite a while.

Or more importantly that is what it's going to take to get all the less technically competent people out there who are already afraid to load Linux to switch to the Steam OS.James was not too familiar with what Virtual Programming and their eON wrapper actually does and could not comment on their technology, but WINE/Crossover will surely become another option in the market of porting DX10-11 games, fairly soon. That is what will get me to ditch my copy of MS Windows.
WINE STEAM FOR MAC SOFTWARE
If not, then I would like Steam to launch the Windows binary kept up to date by Steam, using the WINE software (kept up to date by Steam) with a configuration suggested by Steam to run my game in WINE. If the game I am trying to play has a Linux binary then launch that. I would like the Steam OS to have native support for WINE built in. (Or load the Windows version of Steam with WINE first, then I have two versions of Steam on my PC. I am going to always have a significant portion of my library that I will always have to boot into Windows to play. Sorry to resurrect this thread, but if Valve wants me to cut my ties to MS, then we have to address the simple reality that of the more than 240 games in my library most of them will never be recompiled into a Linux binary. They want to get away from MS and the Windows OS. You can already use Steam with WIne, so there is no need for Valve to do anything official with it.īy using Wine, Valve is still supporting Microsoft. Originally posted by Spawn of Totoro:Valve wants native Linux support. Of course, the user has to be informed, that Valve/Steam is not responsible for the gaming expirience. Of course, the implementation time is much higher, but the setup scripts can be managed by the community. There is also an existing software that works that way:, also available for Mac. Building a software component for Steam, that integrates wine and supports setup scripts to set up a game to work with wine in the best way possible. This, of course, will take much more implementation time. Inform the user (one time for all) Valve/Steam is not responsible for the gaming experience. I don't think that would take to much work time. manually adding a wine prefix in the run options of a game.

Just allow Linux/Mac users to download Windows Games (by a hidden option for example) and allow the users to manage the runtime environment for themselves, e.g. For that Games I have to use a seperate Steam installation on the Wine platform. Grand Theft Auto,īUT: There are many games available on Steam that aren't that new, but do run very well on Wine. Wine is not really an option for playing modern Games (in general) on Mac/Linux.
WINE STEAM FOR MAC MAC
Well, you did very good work on porting existing Windows games to Mac and Linux.
WINE STEAM FOR MAC FOR MAC
How about an option (may be an advanced feature), to also download Windows games for Mac or Linux and run it with Wine.
